NGVA Europe primer on the benefits of LNG as a fuel for all transport modes

In January, the natural and bio gas vehicle association NGVA Europe released a position paper about liquefied natural gas (LNG) as a sustainable fuel option for all modes of transportation (including land, water and air). The paper was authored by Dr. Antonio Nicotra, general manager of Gasfin Investment S.A., Managing Director Air LNG GmbH.

The report was designed to objectively compile relevant information on the defining characteristics of LNG, including a brief history of the LNG market; an overview of the current supply chain; the benefits of LNG as a transport fuel; its production technologies and safety aspects, as well as distribution and application technologies and efficiencies. The paper avoids specific references any particular business operator.

NGVA Europe recently released a position paper about LNG as a sustainable fuel option for all modes of transportation.

The paper articulated four key benefits of LNG as a transport fuel:
• It is cleaner and safer than other conventional fuel sources;
• The nascent LNG industry is “constantly achieving cost reductions,” while the oil industry is facing rising production costs;
• There is steadily increasing availability of natural gas options at fueling stations; and
• Energy-dense LNG is more compact than oil, and therefore easier to store.

The paper noted that many vehicles powered by natural gas are still based on a design for gasoline or diesel fuel, and that only recently have engine manufacturers begun to design engines dedicated to and optimized for the use of natural gas. It also mentioned that LNG may be better suited for commercial mobile applications because it has an inherent “time factor” less appropriate for private vehicles that may be only occasionally used.
