Natural Gas Buses

If there’s one transportation sector that has embraced natural gas fuel more than any other, it’s public transit buses. According to Natural Gas Vehicles for America, transit buses make up about 62% of all NGVs in use. With natural gas buses gaining momentum around the world, other fleets and passenger vehicles are quickly following suit.

With economic and environmental value placed in fuel efficiency, as well as impressive safety ratings, natural gas buses are making a strong impact in the public transportation sector and are primed to grow even more.

Natural Gas Buses Promote Eco-Friendly Public Transportation

Reducing emissions up to 55%, natural gas is a great asset for fleets looking to limit their carbon footprints and meet environmental regulations.

In 2012, Polish bus manufacturer Solbus introduced the Solbus Solcity 12 LNG bus to several Polish transportation markets, with the following results:

  • Solbus’ natural gas buses emit 25 percent less carbon dioxide and 75 percent less carbon monoxide than petrol-fuelled engines.
  • Solbus’ products were able to comply with the European Union’s (EU) Euro-6 ecological standards without any need for additional filtering, with particulate matter emissions reaching almost zero.
  • The Solbus Solcity 12 natural gas bus also met the Euro-6 standards calling for limited nitrogen oxide emissions.

By adopting a fleet of natural gas buses, Poland’s public transportation network aims to save at least 10% of its energy costs.

Economic Benefits of Natural Gas Buses

As oil prices continue to increase, natural gas is becoming more appealing for public transportation facilities. This is because natural gas fuel costs about 35% less than diesel fuel.

A 2012 study by the European Gas Forum examined cost-efficient alternative pathways to reach emissions targets set out by the European Commission’s 2011 Transport White Paper that would reduce emissions. Among its findings was the fact that urban fleet vehicles, such as buses, are especially attractive for compressed natural gas fuel since fleet vehicles return to their own depots to refuel, circumventing the need for widespread infrastructure

Other Benefits of Natural Gas Buses

Along with their economic and environmental practicality, natural gas buses also maintain low noise levels, allowing them to service urban areas around the clock.

LNG buses also refuel much faster than their counterparts. While some buses take several hours to refuel, the Solbus Solcity LNG bus, for example, refuels in just minutes.

The Future of Natural Gas Buses

Already accounting for almost 2/3 of all vehicular natural gas use, natural gas buses should see even more growth as more public transportation networks look to “go green.” These environmental benefits along with the fuel cost savings are making natural gas buses a popular choice in cities around the world, and the use of natural gas buses is expected to grow 19% between 2012 and 2019.
